Each year the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) sponsors contests
in elementary, secondary (K - 12) and at the college or university level.

In the Essay Contest,
the WCTU offered students an opportunity to research the subjects of
alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs with emphasis on total abstinence.

Awards are granted to the winners ranging from $5 to $500!

The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) of So. Calif.,
would like to offer graduating high school seniors
an opportunity to win a $200 scholarship.

This scholarship is for seniors who are interested in attending college and who have an interest in maintaining personal health through promoting abstinence from harmful substances such as alcohol, drugs and tobacco.

You are invited to fill out the attached scholarship application and submit it to the address listed on the application.

It is important that you have at least a 3.8 GPA with strong emphasis on how total abstinence has impacted your life.

You are invited to share ways that you have integrated abstinence from harmful substances into your everyday life through work experience, special interests and attitudes you have developed.

We look forward to receiving your application by April 15.

2017 College Speech Contest

 

WE ARE PLANNING TO HAVE A STATE WCTU

2017 - INTERCOLLEGIATE ORATORICAL CONTEST

April 1 (8), 2017 - 2 PM at

  1. "The general topic must be on the use of beverage alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin or marijuana, or pornography, and their related problems; the effects of these or their abuse as it relates to the health and happiness of the individual, the protection of the home, safety, crime and violence and economic impact.

  2. The content must be original and demonstrate depth of research. A list of at least ten references, five of which must be cited in the oration, must accompany the written version. Personal references should be extremely limited and used sparingly.

  3. Abstinence must be referred to as the solution or a significant part of the solution. With respect to medical references and citations, contestants should note that the position of the WCTU is that "alcoholism is not a disease but rather a condition that develops from the use of alcohol."

Attention College Speech & Debate Teams

Here are the NEW GUIDELINES for the 2017 So. Calif., WCTU State College contest (Intercollegiate Oratorical Contest):

1st place-----------$500
($250 awarded at state contest time & another
$250 later awarded when speech is presented at our WCTU National Convention*.)

2nd place-----------$300

3rd place-----------$200

$100 given to the college where the preliminary contest is held.

No more than 2 contestants shall be chosen from each college.

LOCATION: Contest will be held at 551 S. Kingsley Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90020 (parking in back).

DATE/TIME: The college can choose which date is best for them — April 1st or 8th .

A copy of the speech must be sent to <wctusocal@gmail.com> 2 weeks before state contest.

* July 24 - 27, Harrisburg, PA (student transportation + lodging paid)


NEW Financial award AMOUNTS for 2017: 1st = $500, 2nd = $300 & 3rd = $200.

2016 COLLEGE WINNERS

SO. CALIF. WCTU
2016 INTERCOLLEGIATE ORATORICAL CONTEST

Students (7) from CSU-Fullerton & Fullerton College
showed an interest in competing.

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Southern California held its 57th INTERCOLLEGIATE ORATORICAL CONTEST on Saturday April 1st, 2017 at the Los Angeles state headquarters building. Two colleges entered 5 students who competed with memorized speeches on the general topic of temperance relating to the abuse of alcohol, drugs (both illegal & legal) and/or home protection. State officers conducted the contest and appointed judges. The Battle Hymn of the Republic and other songs were sung. After the winners were announced, refreshments were served.

Jonah Stoffers won 1st place, Gabael Botello 2nd place & Olivia LeValley 3rd place. The speeches had to be memorized, without any props & less than 12 minutes. The first place winner would also compete at the National WCTU competition in Harrisburg, PA July 24-27 (airfare & lodging paid) plus $500; 2nd place $300 & 3rd place $200.
